Accommodating diversity in aged care updating twitter from cell phone
Social inclusion is integral to Lifeview’s principles, policy and practice.
Our approach to engaging with and caring for residents who may experience social, financial or cultural isolation or disadvantage in accessing appropriate residential aged care aligns with Australian better practice articulated in current national strategies such as the National Ageing and Aged Care Strategy for People from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Backgrounds and the National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Ageing and Aged Care Strategy, (Do HA 2012).
The program commenced in January 2013 and has provided an interest for residents from varying backgrounds, physical capabilities and enabled education for other residents and staff.
Data was collected on resident and staff birthplaces and was graphed on a large world map featured at the entrance of the home.
Reminiscing is an important part of the program and residents talk about their birth country, experiences growing up and their culture.
Armchair travel, documentaries, slide shows of photography, and Google maps form are used in the program.
The plan builds on the department’s wide-ranging efforts to improve service access and effectiveness for culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
These communities include those with a long established presence in Victoria, as well as recently arrived migrants, including refugees and asylum seekers.
Victorians come from over 230 countries, speak over 200 languages and follow more than 120 different faiths. The recreational activities officers provide prompts using pictures and questions to trigger memories.Cultural dance is demonstrated by staff and other community groups attracting large numbers of residents at these events and feedback is always positive. The credit line comprises two streams: Health Programs and Human Services Programs. For more information contact the department using the contact details available on this page.
